Season of Echoes

One thread at a time, pulled sideways through the four seasons already told

Where Unravelling, Drifting, Seeding and Resonance each move forward through their own months, Echoes moves the other way, looking back across all four at once. Each essay follows one thing (the body, water, kinship, silence, the shape of a morning, a route, a voice, the dead) and asks what it was doing all along, underneath the four seasons that were too busy living it to notice. The essays share one subtitle, "An echo, cut sideways across the seasons", and the order below is simply the order they were written in. Ten essays make up the season. Eight are written, and the last two are held open below until they are.

What is the Season of Echoes?
Ten essays, written after the four seasons of The Art of Unravelling had already run their course, that each pull one thread (the body, water, kinship, silence, a morning, a route, a voice, the dead) sideways through Unravelling, Drifting, Seeding and Resonance. Eight of the ten are written and are listed below; the ninth and tenth keep their places in the list until Rowena writes them. It looks back across the whole practice rather than moving forward through a season of its own.
Is Echoes a season like the other four?
Not in the same sense. There is no dedicated Substack section behind it and no calendar arc: it is a cross-cutting tag rather than a sequential season. The site keeps the name Season of Echoes because that is what the essays share, not because it follows the same shape as Unravelling, Drifting, Seeding or Resonance.
Do the essays need to be read in order?
No fixed order is required. The list below sets out the order they were written in, from the opening essay on the body through to the most recent, on the dead. Each one also stands on its own, since each is already a retrospective look back rather than a step in an unfolding story.
