The Drift Pile - closing the Season of Drifting - week 12

A soft reorientation toward what’s already here

1 September 2025 · Rowena Morrow

Twelve weeks ago, we stepped away from the path.

We loosened our grip on direction, untethered ourselves from urgency, and entered a season without a map. A season of drifting: with each other, the edges, and with what hadn’t yet taken form.

We didn’t set goals…we asked questions. We didn’t aim for clarity…we practiced attention. Now, we gather at the edge again…not to conclude, but to pause. To mark the movement, even if we didn’t “go anywhere.” To notice what’s collected at our feet and to warm our hands beside the third drift pile.

This isn’t an ending, it’s a low tide, a breath before what comes next.

This season began with the in-between. Not the clarity of compost or the fullness of fruiting, but the liminal space between death and emergence. A stretch of time when everything felt a little foggy, a little porous. When the systems around us still asked for certainty but something in us had begun to refuse.

We named the drift.

We practiced soft noticing.

We let go of leading.

We followed what shimmered: in sound, kinship and field.

We didn’t ask: Where are we going?

We asked: What’s here now? What’s subtle? What’s relational? What’s tugging at the edge of our perception?

A slow drift through the season

Week 1 — Learning to drift

We began without a map — exploring what it means to move without knowing, and to stay in relationship with the tide, the weather, the unknown.

Week 2 — Edge walking practice

We learned that emergence lives at the edge — where ecosystems meet, where identities blur, where we become more porous to the world around us.

Week 3 — Drifting as resistance: five counter-cultural kin

We felt through kinship metaphors that invited a different kind of fidelity. Not to fixed identity, but to presence, softness, and slow transformation.

Week 4 — Drift pile #1

We paused and looked at what was gathering: shells, half-thoughts, incomplete threads — the beauty of what doesn’t need to be finished to be real.

Week 5 — Social drifting

We asked what it means to drift together — not to align, but to attune. Not to lead or follow, but to move with care in shared uncertainty.

Week 6 — Social drift practice

We practiced showing up without clarity. Noticing. Catching each other’s sentences. Tending the field without forcing form.

Week 7 — Kinship story: Through the fog

We told a story about people who didn’t know what they were doing — but kept showing up anyway. Because the showing up was the story.

Week 8 — Drift pile #2

We noticed what had tangled. What had begun to echo. What hadn’t made sense yet, but kept returning.

Week 9 — Organisational drifting

We let go of plans. We explored the idea of the flotilla — multiple vessels, no one in charge, held together by shared weather and mutual regard.

Week 10 — Flotilla orientation practice

We mapped our boats. Named the current. Noticed what we were each carrying. And asked: how do we stay close without collapsing into sameness?

Week 11 — Kinship in the middle of the drift

We stood on the sidelines of suburban footy. Where no one is in charge, and yet it all somehow happens. Where coherence is built through quiet continuity.

Week 12 — Drift pile #3

Which brings us here: to gather what has floated ashore.

Not to hold it tightly. But to notice. To thank it. To see what might want to be carried into the next tide.

What we’ve learned (and unlearned)

This season didn’t deliver transformation, it offered movement without destination. It gave us drift logic, ecotones, kinship fields, and the practice of staying with subtlety. We didn’t make sense of everything but we became more able to listen to what doesn’t yet make sense.

We learned:

  • That coherence doesn’t require control.

  • That presence can be enough.

  • That not all futures arrive with clarity, some emerge through relation.

We practiced:

  • Noticing what’s shimmering at the edge.

  • Letting form follow feeling.

  • Being changed by proximity, not performance.

A conversation and a remembering

Earlier this week, a friend told me she felt stuck, but as we talked, something else emerged: a quiet inventory of rituals she already knew helped her.

Things she’d done before in difficult times. Things that steadied her, restored her, reminded her who she was. She wasn’t doing them, she said, but she remembered them.

They were there. Behind the fog. Waiting.

It made me wonder—what if this final drift pile isn’t about collecting more? What if it’s about gathering the tools we already know? This season was not about theory; it was about practice. It was about building the capacity to stay present and relational when the maps disappear. To support you in continuing this vital work, I have gathered the core practices of this season into tangible forms you can return to whenever you need them.

Tools for the journey

As we stand at this low tide, two tools are available to help you gather your own drift pile and orient to what comes next.

1. The Drift Compass

As we look toward the next season, the Drift Compass offers a soft tool for orienting to what comes next. It is not a set of tasks or goals, but four relational postures to help you sense your way forward: Listen, Tend, Offer, and Anchor. It is a way to turn your drift pile from a random scatter of fragments into a symbolic compass, a ritual cairn to guide your next steps.

For those who wish to go deeper with this practice, you can find the full, beautifully designed Practice Card with all its guiding questions below.

2. The Season of Drifting Practice Bundle

To carry the full arc of this season with you, I have gathered all the core practices into a single bundle. This is a complete toolkit for navigating complexity with relational awareness, both individually and with your teams.

The bundle includes:

  • Edge walking with an AI buddy: A practice for expanding your perception.

  • Tending the Field: Two rituals for group connection and coherence.

  • Flotilla Orientation: A deep practice for sensing a group’s shared direction.

  • The Drift Compass: The orienting practice for finding your bearings.

These are the tools that help us stay in the drift without becoming lost. They are the anchors and rudders for the quiet, essential work of navigating the fog.

Looking toward Season of Seeding

We don’t need to rush. Something is starting to ripen, but you don’t have to leap. You just need to notice the next, closest step—the one that grows out of what you’ve already composted, drifted with, and held.

The next season will be the Season of Seeding. It begins not with declaration but with offering: to notice what is ready with courage and reciprocity. You already carry what you need; we are just making space for it to bloom.
