There is a kind of knowing that doesn’t come from a plan. It doesn’t arise from roadmaps or fixed goals, but from sensing. It is the quiet skill of staying in rhythm with each other, even when no one is steering.
The Season of Drift has invited us into this slower, more relational way of moving. It has not been a season of high clarity or resolution. Instead, we have drifted, not aimlessly, but intentionally, away from the demand to have everything figured out. We have practiced noticing, waiting, and letting the field speak.
Now, something different is being asked of us. Not to fix or resolve, but to sense together. To acknowledge that even in the drift, we are not moving alone. And so, the question becomes: how do we stay in relationship as we move, even when the direction is unclear?
This is where we need more than individual intuition. We need a shared practice of field awareness.
The Flotilla: A map for navigating the unknown
I want to offer you a powerful metaphor for this work: the flotilla.
In traditional organisational life, we are taught to move as a single ship, with a captain, a heading, and a rigid chain of command. In liminal times, when things are softening and shifting, we are not a single ship, we are a flotilla.
A flotilla is a gathering of vessels, each with its own orientation and rhythm, held together not by rigid tethers, but by relational gravity. It moves not because everyone agrees on a single plan, but because everyone is listening to the same wind, the same tide, the same unseen pull.
To navigate this way requires a different kind of map, one that shows resonance, not just roles; currents, not just KPIs.
Practice: Flotilla Orientation
The Flotilla Orientation is a practice for creating such a map. It is a deep, relational process that invites a group to make its own complex system visible. Using physical or digital objects, the group builds a living model of their flotilla, representing the projects, people, values, and tensions that make up their shared reality.
The practice gently guides the group through an inquiry into its own dynamics. It is a way to sense the currents influencing the system, to notice where energy is flowing or stuck, and to feel into the quiet direction that is trying to emerge, all without the pressure to create a single, unified strategy.
A tool for those who hold the space
This is deep and potent work. Making a system visible can surface unspoken truths, hidden tensions, and profound vulnerabilities. For this reason, how the practice is held is everything.
This is not a casual exercise to be tried on a whim. It requires a safe container and gentle, skillful facilitation. It asks for a host who can guide the process with care, protect the space from collapsing into blame or problem-solving, and hold the group through the complexity that emerges.
For those of you who lead teams, facilitate groups, or host communities, I have created a complete toolkit to guide you in this practice. The Flotilla Orientation Practice Card is more than just a set of instructions; it is a vessel designed to hold this work with integrity. It includes:
A clear, step-by-step process for the full 1-3 hour practice.
A rich set of prompts to guide the group’s sensing at each stage.
Most importantly, a dedicated Facilitator’s Guide with essential guidance on preparing the space, the facilitator’s stance, and how to navigate the most delicate moments with safety and care.
In seasons of fog, we don’t need a better plan. We need a better way of being together in the not-knowing. This practice is an invitation into that way of being.

Why this matters
The Season of Drift has asked us to resist urgency, to stay with emergence and to move at the pace of relationship, not output.
This practice is a container for that:
Not to align, but to attune.
Not to plan, but to sense.
Not to fix, but to be with what is shifting — relationally, slowly, together.
This is not leadership.
This is listening.
And sometimes, that’s more than enough.
